Senior Traffic Operations Engineer

Kittelson & Associates has an immediate opening for a Senior Traffic Operations Engineer in California. We are looking for a talented, energetic professional to join the team and focus on, as well as lead, complex and high-profile projects throughout California involving traffic operations on freeway corridors, interchanges, local roadways and managed lanes. This position is key in developing concepts and implementing advanced traffic management.


Job description

As a senior level engineer you will develop and screen improvement alternatives, perform traffic operations analysis, macro/micro simulation analysis and refine conceptual designs. You will also be responsible for the development of cost-effective data collection plans, proposing methodologies and objectively presenting findings while building consensus among stakeholders and the public. The successful candidate will have a strong desire and the interpersonal skills to interface with clients and will receive mentoring and support from the team to become successful in this role. The successful candidate will be looking for more opportunities to take on additional responsibility as they manage their own career path at the firm.

Job requirements

Required qualifications:
                                                                                                                                                                • 5-10 years of traffic engineering experience with a background in freeway corridors, interchanges, local roadways, and managed lanes.
                                                                                                                                                              • Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering or related field.
                                                                                    • Registered as California professional engineer or traffic engineer. 
                                                              • Minimum of four years of hands-on operations experience in analyzing and solving complex transportation planning and engineering problems dealing with all travel modes.
                                                          • An understanding of the Caltrans Highway Design Manual, Plan Preparation Manual and CA MUTCD
                          • Ability to use a variety of software programs effectively and make timely and informed recommendations to clients, elected officials, and stakeholders.
          • Extensive experience in working on a variety of projects, including traffic and transit microsimulation, multimodal corridor studies, transportation demand management plans, transportation impact studies, bicycle and pedestrian facility planning and design, and local/regional transportation plans.
        • Ability to effectively manage projects, and develop solid internal and client relationships.
      • Proven experience in providing quality control oversight of technical analysis.
  • Strong willingness and ability to lead and win competitive marketing pursuits.

Preferred additional qualifications:
                                                  • Experience with express lanes and ramp metering. 
                                            • Ability to provide technical advice on electronic signing and variable speed limits.
                                      • Experience in coordinating with environmental planners, stakeholder outreach teams, and other disciplines for project delivery.
                              • Confident public speaker before laypersons, stakeholders, teaming partners, and owners.
