Transportation Engineer with Development Services Focus

Kittelson & Associates is looking for an experienced transportation consultant to join any one of our four offices in California – Orange, Oakland, Sacramento, San Francisco – as we continue to grow and expand in the state. This is an excellent opportunity for a transportation expert who has a strong, reputable history of working in the private development services area of the transportation profession.

Our firm has a long history of demonstrated experience in developing transportation solutions that facilitate successful land use entitlement and subsequent development. We have been providing transportation engineering, planning, and research services to private organizations, government agencies, and municipalities since 1985. We develop thoughtful and creative transportation solutions that apply directly to real-world problems with the goal of improving the performance of all transportation systems. Our staff members practice the firm’s outward focus by developing practical and innovative transportation solutions, mentoring young staff, providing educational opportunities for industry professionals, and finding ways to improve the value of our work.

Job description

This person will provide services to private developers and development-related organizations throughout California. We are seeking a candidate with extensive experience in preparing transportation engineering/planning studies to support the permitting, design, and construction of development projects involving all types of land uses. This person should be equally familiar and experienced with both private and public sector clients. The candidate must bring a strong reputation for working collaboratively, finding solutions to technically complex problems, and building consensus between involved agencies, clients, and stakeholders. The candidate will have a strong entrepreneurial spirit for growing the business and a passion for pursing and winning work. We require a heavy emphasis on collaboration with team members and a desire to develop staff at all levels.

Job requirements

Required qualifications:
  • Candidates should have a minimum of 10 years of demonstrated experience with a focus on traffic operations, transportation planning, transportation engineering, or environmental planning specializing in transportation.
  • Certification in AICP, CTP, PE, TE, PTOE, LEED, or PTP.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering with an emphasis on Transportation, Planning, or a closely-related field; Master’s degree preferred.
  • Must have comprehensive knowledge of traffic operations analysis software, such as Synchro, HCS, Traffix, and/or Vistro.
  • Strong working knowledge of CEQA and NEPA, and ability to look to the future with impacts of SB743.
  • Must have effective communication skills and the capability to appropriately represent our clients' interests while balancing the needs of other project stakeholders.
  • Strong ability to effectively manage projects and develop solid internal and client relationships.
  • Proven experience in providing quality technical analysis and oversight.
  • Strong willingness and capacity to lead and win competitive marketing pursuits.
  • Well-connected in the local community, with the ability to partner with key professional partners in development, architecture, environmental and planning community.

Preferred additional qualifications
:
  • The ideal candidate is a self-starter with the ability to communicate recommendations persuasively in a variety of public forums, whether it be making presentations to a neighborhood group or providing professional representation at public hearings.
  • Strong need to be detail-oriented and have the capacity to prioritize and execute multiple project responsibilities simultaneously.
  • The successful candidate must have very strong oral and written communication, interpersonal, and analytical skills.
  • Past experience in preparing multi-modal transportation solutions, impact studies, parking management and circulation solutions, and/or developing design concepts is preferred.
